A Prayer to Heal A Divided Nation

Dear God,

This new day has dawned with this country more divided than it has been since the days of the Civil War. What divided us then continues to tear at the seams of the fabric of this nation.

Help us to remember that the experiment called democracy is not over; it is still being tested. After 240 years of existence, the final results are not yet in. We still have work to do. It stretches out before us, across wheat fields and deserts, from the mountains to the prairies, from sea to shining sea.

In the midst of our sense of victory, help us to remember your call to us to love one another as you love us.

In the midst of our sense of defeat, help us to remember that you still reign; you alone are worshiped; you alone are God.

Help us to put aside our own feelings – jumbled and confused as they may be at the moment – in service of others, our families and friends and neighbors – here and around the world.

Help us remember your high calling to us to be agents of forgiveness and reconciliation, love and peace, healing and hope in a world made dark by fear and hatred and brokenness.

Help us to rebuild this nation by seeking out your image in the face of others, finding the best in us to serve those who are the least, the lost and the lonely.

Help us to remember the words of one of your servants of old who reminded us that ‘perfect love casts out fear’. Help us perfect our love.

We are your people. You know us by many names. You are our God. We know you by many names.

May we find strength in our diversity and seek the courage to live into what is written on every piece of currency in this nation: In God we Trust. In God. We Trust.

For only in you can we live in safety. Only in you will we find justice. Only in you will we know the peace that passes all human understanding.

Amen.

Prayer

Father God,

Today as we are physically distanced but socially and spiritually connected, we seek your presence. We wish we could meet together as a church family in your house of worship but thankfully we can come together and express our faith and confidence in you our Creator and Redeemer.

As the world seems to be falling apart we turn to you our only hope and strength. Father, today we pray not only for ourselves but for all people in our world. Our prayer goes out to all that have lost loved ones to the virus. There are countless others that are suffering economic loss, civil and political unrest, and health problems. Give us the insight to not just look at ourselves but to reach out to community and world with the love and hope that only you can give us to share.

Thank you for this day and time to come before you in with praise, hope and thanksgiving. May we always look only to Jesus. Psalms 46:1-11, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Although we aren’t able to do many of the things we typically are able to, there’s still a-lot of places we can visit that are absolutely amazing. In this video I share with you are some of the people, places, and activities I miss doing. What do you miss doing the most?

Psalms 16:11

You make known to me the path of life;

    you will fill me with joy in your presence,

    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence

by Sarah Young

"Keep your eyes on Me! Waves of adversity are washing over you, and you feel tempted to give up. As your circumstances consume more and more of your attention, you are losing sight of Me. Yet I am with you always, holding you by your right hand. I am fully aware of your situation, and I will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear.

Your gravest danger is worrying about tomorrow. If you try to carry tomorrow's burdens today, you will stagger under the load and eventually fall flat. You must discipline yourself to live within the boundaries of today. It is in the present moment that I walk close to you, helping you carry your burdens. Keep your focus on My Presence in the present."

Psalms 73:23 "Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand"

Today’s prayer is offered by Chris Rojas.

Dear Church Family,

As we continue to take shelter and start seeing our local economies attempt to open, I’d like to share a few thoughts with you and a prayer.

Remember that you can give tithe and offering via our church website. Go to sloadventist.org, click on Homepage, then click on GIVE under the MENU option. Or click here.

If you need any help navigating our website for tithe or any resource on there, please reach out to myself or Monica Yeo. We are happy to point you in the right direction and listen to your suggestions.

It’s Mother’s Day tomorrow, Sunday May 9th. If you happen to be taking shelter with mom, remember to give her a big hug and remind her how much you love her. If mom is far away and you are not able to see her due to our current situation, try to contact her via phone or video conference. COVID-19 is a reminder that life can be delicate. So, let’s seize the day and enjoy life with mom.

To all the moms; Thank you for all you do for us; nurturing us, cleaning after us, helping us grow, helping us go our own way in life. Do not doubt how much we treasure you.

I’d like to share this prayer with you all…

Dear God,

There’s so much to talk to you about these days. Things have been different lately. Bizarre, in fact. There’s uncertainty and confusion in the air. But amid all that there’s also things we are thankful for. So, we come to you to share what’s in our hearts and minds on this Sabbath morning.

We thank you for our mothers. It’s likely many of us are not able to see them in person, but we thank you for them just as much. We ask that you bless them many times over the number of times they bless us daily.

God, it’s now been about two months since we’ve been taking shelter during the spread of this virus.

Some people have lost their jobs, and with those jobs, their primary source of income. We ask that you provide in this time of need. And we also ask that you open our eyes, us who can help, so we can seize the opportunity to help those in need.

Others have fallen sick to this virus and are fighting to get better. Jolene Brighten and her family come to mind. Your ways are mysterious, but we sure feel like your heeling hand would be timely right about now.

We lift the families to you that have lost a family member from this virus.

Also, we don’t forget the brave efforts of our medical professionals putting themselves at risk on the front lines of this fight. We thank you for them and the critical service they are providing. We ask that you continue to fuel them with courage, focus, and safety.

There are people too working hard to bring back the economies of cities and states back to more a more normal state. We ask that you bring focus and clarity to their planning process.

God, only you know why these things happen. We just ask that you bring us through it stronger and with a positive outlook toward one another.

And finally, I’d like to ask for a special favor. That you be with the family of Ahmaud Arbery. They are going to need peace and strength during this time of loss. It’s so upsetting that we continue to see actions of hatred toward our African American brothers and sisters. It’s difficult to do so, but I also pray for the individuals responsible for this crime. There’s so much help we need in this aspect of our society, God.

Help us.

These things we pray with faith,

Amen.

Elder’s Prayer

Sometimes It Just Seems to Be Too Much

Sometimes, Lord, it just seems to be too much:
too much violence, too much fear;
too much of demands and problems;
too much of broken dreams and broken lives;
too much of war and slums, illness and dying;
too much of greed and squishy fatness and the sounds of people devouring each other and the earth;
too much of stale routines and quarrels, unpaid bills and dead ends
too much of words lobbed in to explode and leaving shredded hearts and lacerated souls;………
too much Lord, too much!
Or is it too little,
Too little of compassion,
Too little of courage, or daring
Of persistence, of sacrifice;
Too little of music and laughter and celebrations?
O God,
Make of me some nourishment for these starved times,
Some food for my brothers and sisters who are hungry for gladness and hope,
That, being bread for them,
I may also be fed and be full.
Amen
